Heatmap
Also called click map.
Heatmap is an aggregate picture of clicks, taps or movement over a page layout. Warm colours mark where activity clusters.
How it is measured
The tool records coordinates for each event, normalises them to a layout, and colours them by density. Click maps, scroll maps and move maps are the common forms, and each needs enough sessions to be stable.
Tarsier does not draw heatmaps. The nearest substitute is a handful of custom click events on the controls you care about, compared against pageviews.
Worked example
A bakery's order page heatmap shows 41 percent of clicks on the logo and only 9 percent on Order now. People expect the logo to go home, and many were trying.
The bakery makes Order now larger and adds a sticky bar. Orders per visit rise from 3.2 to 4.1 percent.
How it differs
A heatmap summarises many sessions in one picture. Session replay shows a single one. Scroll depth gives vertical reach. A map is good at spotting patterns and poor at explaining intent.
Common errors
Reading maps from a small sample. Ignoring responsive layouts. Treating hot as good. Skipping consent. Mixing mobile and desktop sessions on one map.
In practice
Study one page at a time and wait for several hundred sessions before acting.
