Click tracking
Also called click event.
Click tracking is recording clicks on chosen elements as events. It answers which buttons and links people actually use.
How it is measured
A listener on the page catches clicks on selected elements and sends an event with a label, destination or ID. Some tools capture all clicks and filter later, others need a list. Each click becomes a row in the event stream.
Tarsier does not capture clicks on its own. You call its event function from your own click handler for the few elements you decided to measure, so nothing leaves the page that you did not choose.
Worked example
A SaaS pricing page has two buttons, Start free and Talk to sales. Over a month Start free gets 1,740 clicks and Talk to sales gets 210. The sales team had assumed the opposite.
They rewrite the sales button to promise a reply within an hour, and clicks rise to 330 from the same traffic.
How it differs
Click tracking records clicks as events. Outbound link tracking narrows that to clicks leaving your domain. Rage click and dead click are patterns found inside click streams. A click is interest, not a conversion.
Common errors
Tracking every click and drowning in noise. Naming events inconsistently so the same button appears as three rows. Counting clicks on elements that do not navigate. Ignoring touch and keyboard activation. Reading clicks as people.
In practice
Pick five clicks that map to decisions and track only those. Use one naming pattern for all of them, and check once a week that each still fires after a deploy.
