Weekly active users

Also called WAU.

Weekly active users is the count of identifiers that sent a hit in a seven-day window. It sits between daily and monthly counts.

How it is measured

Count distinct identifiers over seven days, either a rolling window ending today or a fixed Monday-to-Sunday block. The two differ by a few percent, so pick one.

Tarsier keeps nothing across days, so a weekly figure is stitched from daily counts and leans high. Use it for week-over-week change, not for an exact audience size.

Worked example

A community forum has 4,100 weekly active users and about 1,300 on a typical weekday. After a redesign WAU stays at 4,100 but the weekday figure rises to 1,700.

Members come back more often without the audience getting bigger, and WAU alone would have hidden the improvement.

How it differs

Weekly active users pools a week. Daily active users pools one day. Monthly active users pools longer. Dividing daily by weekly shows how many days a week a typical user shows up.

Common errors

Mixing rolling and calendar weeks. Including a holiday week without a note. Comparing WAU to MAU without scale. Treating it as customers. Ignoring seasonality.

In practice

Use WAU as the headline for products people use weekly, such as newsletters and weekly reports, and pair it with the daily figure.
