Exit page

Also called last page.

Exit page is the last page recorded before a session ended. The report lists URLs by how many sessions finished there.

How it is measured

Take the final pageview in each session and group by URL. The count is how many sessions ended there; the share is usually that count over total sessions. A person can exit through a link to another site, a closed tab or silence.

In Tarsier a visit ends when the tab closes or goes quiet, so the report is stable for finished days and still moving for today.

Worked example

A support portal has 5,200 sessions in a month. 1,480 end on /status, 910 on /contact, and 640 on /account/password-reset. The status page is a quick check and a good place to end. The password reset page is not.

The team traces the reset exits to a form that returns a confirmation without a sentence telling people to check their email. They add a line and the exits fall by two thirds the following month.

How it differs

An exit page is a URL seen as the end of a session. A landing page is the URL that begins it. Exit is the single event, and the page report aggregates those events by URL. Check bounce to see which exit-page sessions never went anywhere else.

Common errors

Assuming the top exit page is the worst page. Ignoring that the home page of a one-page site is both landing and exit. Forgetting thank-you pages. Not splitting by device. Reading counts without the page's traffic.

In practice

Review the top ten exit pages monthly. Mark the ones that are meant to end a visit and ignore them. For the rest, open the page as a visitor would and ask what the next step is.
