Ecommerce tracking

Also called purchase tracking.

Ecommerce tracking is recording purchase objects such as items, value, tax and shipping as structured events.

How it is measured

Send a purchase event with an order ID, total, currency and optionally items. The order ID prevents duplicates.

Tarsier takes an event name and a short data string, so keep the payload small: order ID and total are enough.

Worked example

A plant nursery wires a purchase event after payment succeeds. In the first week it logs 87 events and the payment provider reports 84 orders. Three are duplicates from a refreshed confirmation page.

The developer uses the order ID to prevent duplicates, and the counts match.

How it differs

Ecommerce tracking is the recording. A transaction is the unit recorded. Revenue is the sum. Enhanced ecommerce extends it to the steps before purchase.

Common errors

Firing before payment succeeds. No order ID. Including personal data. Mixing currencies. Not matching to the payment provider.

In practice

Reconcile the tracked orders against your payment provider once a week at first.
