Content group

Also called page group.

Content group is a labeled bucket of URLs used to analyze a section as one object, such as blog, docs or product pages.

How it is measured

Define the group by a rule: a path prefix, a page template or a tag you set. Every pageview inherits the group of its URL. Reports then sum views, time and conversions across the whole group.

Tarsier reports by path. To group, use consistent URL prefixes such as /blog/ and /docs/, and filter by those prefixes.

Worked example

A travel magazine has 1,100 articles. Grouping by destination continent shows Europe at 42 percent of views and South America at 6 percent, yet South America articles convert newsletter signups at twice the rate.

The editor commissions 15 more South America pieces.

How it differs

A content group is an analysis bucket. A landing page is a single URL as an entry point. A segment slices visitors, not pages. A pageview is the unit being summed.

Common errors

Changing group rules halfway through a quarter. Overlapping groups. Too many groups. Leaving a miscellaneous bucket that grows. Naming groups after teams.

In practice

Start with four groups that match how your team plans work, and keep their rules fixed.
